FIELDWORK

ACCEssIBLE, INCLUSIVE
REAL-WORLD LEARNING

Fieldwork and site visits to both natural and urban environments are a vital part of our Geography and Environment degree courses, providing essential hands-on learning and valuable context to a range of issues and themes. The applied skills our students gain in the field, such as data collection and analysis, are directly applicable to varied careers.

We provide a range of fieldtrips led by staff with expert knowledge, both embedded as day trips within module teaching and as residential trips within the UK and internationally. Past destinations have included Amsterdam, Iceland, and Granada, although destinations may change every year dependent on staffing and external factors.

We understand that students worry about cost and inclusion in the field. At Sheffield Hallam we are focussed on providing inclusive, accessible, ethical fieldtrips that everyone feels able to take part in.

COST

Our degrees include a no-cost UK residential fieldtrip in year 1, where students only require spending money for meals. In year 2 we offer university-subsidised international field trip options. One is a lower-cost, low-carbon option, that in 2023 was to Amsterdam. All day trips and site visits embedded within module teaching are free for our students. Optional advanced residential field training in year 3 may include an additional cost. We provide free loans of fieldtrip gear to students, including waterproof coats, trousers and boots. Our current fieldtrip destinations offer free visa travel to most UK passport holders.

INCLUSION

We provide fieldtrip briefings well in advance, so students know what to expect. We discuss toilet access and terrain, and ensure accommodations are made for those who need them. Our staff are focussed on creating a sense of community in the field, recognising that the social and personal development on fieldtrips is just as important as the technical  skills gained.

ETHICS

We believe in responsible fieldwork. In our year 2 international fieldwork module we offer a low-carbon option. We teach fieldwork and society sessions to our students, understanding the importance of land ownership and geoconservation. We leave no trace in the field, and work in partnership with locals at our field sites.
