Our modern degree integrates environmental science, ecology and conservation, sustainable resource management, social science and policy.

You can explore our Climate, Sustainability and Environmental Management course modules for years 1, 2 and 3 below, all of which have critical applied skills such as Geographic Information Systems embedded throughout. You have an option to do a placement year between years 2 and 3.
On this innovative course, you can choose to focus on one of our four pathway specialisms (through options embedded within our core modules), or retain a balance between them. Our pathways are:

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE
Develop understanding of the pathways to a sustainable future for people and planet. Learn the basic concepts of sustainability, social justice, nature recovery, circular economy, and the energy transition.
HOW DID WE GET HERE?
Explore climate change from deep time to the anthropocene and develop key foundational knowledge of Earth Systems Science. Understand the social drivers that have caused the planet's climate to change.
UNDER PRESSURE: THE IMPACTS OF THE CLIMATE CRISIS
This module will introduce the interdependence between climate change and biodiversity decline, examining key drivers of global biodiversity loss and how they directly and indirectly relate to the climate crisis. The module will examine different biomes across the world to explore how climate change is impacting Earth's ecosystems and processes.
SKILLS AND TOOLS FOR TACKLING GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHALLENGES
This module develops techniques and professional skills which build a foundation for your future studies and career. You will develop digital skills, including an introduction to Geographical Information Systems, and will gain fieldwork, data collection, laboratory and analytical skills. You will critically reflect on your skills and ambitions and understand how these align with careers addressing global environmental challenges.

Our students have formed Sheffield Hallam's first ever Sustainability Society!
The student-led society is focussed on tackling climate change and promoting sustainable living. The society will arrange socials, nature recovery days and guest speakers, and is open to all SHU students. Follow @sustainabilityshu on insta for updates, and become a member for free here!

This programme is accredited by the Community for Environmental Disciplines in Higher Education (CEDHE), the education committee of the Institution of Environmental Sciences (IES). CEDHE is the collective voice of the environmental sciences academic community and serves to enhance the quality of environmental education worldwide. A programme accredited by CEDHE is assured to meet high standards, contain a strong component of practical, field and theoretical activities, and has excellent opportunities for training, work experience and links to the professional environmental sector. Students enrolled on CEDHE-accredited programmes can apply for free Student Membership of the IES and for a fast-track route to membership once they graduate. This programme is aligned with the academic requirements for Registered Environmental Practitioner (REnvP) and starts graduates on a route towards becoming a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv) or Chartered Scientist (CSci).
